At Monday Morning Meeting, Sonia and Aliza were recognized for completing the 50 Book Challenge! Congratulations girls! We also celebrated Lana's birthday! We reflected on Joe's dad's presentation from last Friday on his coffee production and distribution business. As a class, we mapped out the process and then the students reflected on the process in their Inquiry Journals. See, think, wonder!open for business! After working and shopping, we reflected on what the function of a market is. Key Concept: Function We celebrated Lana's birthday on Thursday with smoothies! Lana brought berries and ice to mix up in our Vitamix that Vitamix Corp. donated to CIS! Key Concept: Connection
We made our own connections to markets and the students decided to create a model drawing of the West Side Market! They are in the process of drawing stands, goods, cost of goods, showing the exchange of money, etc. While communicating their ideas and drawing, they are better understanding the connections between all the components that makeup a market. Before they started drawing, they used their communication skills to talk about what they wanted to draw and why they wanted to draw it. After working on the drawing, they reflected on if using their communication skills beforehand was helpful rather than if everyone just began to draw what they wanted by themselves. They all agreed that communicating beforehand, was much more helpful and productive than if they didn't... growing citizens of the world:). our class picture! At Monday Morning Meeting, a few first graders from Ms. Wightman and Mrs. Fairman's class preformed a Readers Theater- The Little Red Hen. Also, Charlie and Eric Pohl shared how they took action to make special dolls and sell them, in order to raise money and donate it to WAGs. We learned about the process of production and then used books to learn about different types of goods that are produced. Last week, we read a story about people in Uganda who are sick and even dying because they don't have clean water. Some people walk for hours in Africa and sometimes it was just to get dirty water. A boy named Ryan took action and created a foundation called Ryan's Well. Ryan builds wells in Uganda to provide clean water for people. After reading the story and looking at the website, our class was so touched by Ryan's story and cause. We all felt like we had to take action! The class came up with such a great idea! They decided to sell bookmarks at the CIS Holiday Store and then donate the proceeds to Ryan's Well Foundation! Ryan's Well Foundation Website Spencer's mom came in to show us how to make the bookmarks! On Thursday, we watched the 5th graders preform Dancing Classrooms. They did such a great job! We have a few 2nd graders from our class already planning to join when they get to 5th grade! Joe's dad came and did a presentation on his coffee distribution business! What a great connection to our planner! In Math this week, we focused on reviewing for our test and applied a lot of our math skills to our classroom jobs, our classroom business selling our bookmarks! We started a production line to make our bookmarks. Some kids cut the yarn, while others did the advertising then attached the bookmarks to the card stock.
