Key Concept Function: How do surveys and graphs work? We learned all about resources- natural, human, and capital. We read many stories and identified resources the characters used. We love doing yoga for a little brain break! Michaela's brother was featured on channels 8's Stork Report! She was so excited! Aaron was such a thinking when he brought in broken crayons... We were taking a look at the production of making crayons. A video we watched talked about Crayola crayons vs. other brands. Aaron brought in both kinds for us to investigate! This was our last entry in our Weather Journal for the year! We have watched the tree on the playground and observed it's changes throughout the seasons. We talked about temperature, precipitation, wind speed, air pressure, and humidity. We also use the CIS Weather Station to record information about the current weather! The process and production of making ice cream! We had so much fun taking turns at each step of the production process. After we shook, shook, shook... we were able to eat the ice cream we made! Muffins With Mom & Donuts With Dad We had such a great time with families, while enjoying a snack and sharing poetry we had written! First Grade came to visit us and ask us questions about what to expect in 2nd grade! We loved showing them around. Mud Run Oh what fun... oh what a muddy mess! We walked to CSU and watched the 3rd Grade perform The Jungle Book! They did such an amazing job! Many of us can't wait until we can participate next year! 2017 CIS Spelling Bee We watched the upper grades in the Spelling Bee. They did a great job with those hard words! We can't wait until we can participate next year. We were so excited that 2nd grade decided to have their own Spelling Bee... At Monday Morning Meeting the Orchestra played. They sound great! We had so much fun celebrating St. Patrick's Day! Mrs. Bechtel's class came and presented a S.O.L.E. they did... Why do Irish people eat corned beef on St. Patrick's Day? We also celebrated Joshua's birthday! Tech Day was a success! We worked so hard as team toward a goal and have so much fun celebrating our accomplishment! The 1st Grade performed at Monday Morning Meeting. They did a great job! The 5th Graders also revealed their Central Idea for exhibition! How exciting! We began our next unit of inquiry - How We Organize Ourselves. We started with a See, Think, Wonder! We love to play games and work together! This Fact or Opinion game was a little tricky! Junior Achievement came and worked with us all morning. We had a lot of fun and learned so much useful information to help us with our planner. Goods, services, needs, wants, producers, consumers, etc. The donuts they brought might have been the best part though! At Monday Morning Meeting, we had a guest speaker named Madison. She spoke about hope and peace. She is 12 years old and attends another Cleveland school nearby. We like to do yoga before testing, in order to help us find our balance and be mindful of our actions. We were looking up Steve Spangler experiments on youtube in groups of three. We were creating a race car track while exploring force and motion! We were launching cotton balls and ping pong balls in groups of two. Everyone thought that the ping pong ball would go further than the cotton ball. We were right! How to use a dictionary... yes... we still need to learn this skill, even if we have google! Discovery The girls love to play teacher on the board. It is so great how they have fun practicing their math skills! At Monday Morning Meeting, the middle school students played the African Drums. They did amazing! The chef from a local Cleveland restaurant, Pura Vida, came to speak to us at lunch. We got to ask questions too! Chinese New Year Celebration Playhouse Workshop Working together on a book study about weather! Biographies We have been reading all about famous scientists and inventors. Now, we are researching and taking notes on a specific person. We started to write Book Reviews and share them after we finish a book. Marilia gave her latest book 5 stars! Scientific inquiry leads to investigation. We completed the first steps of our Catapult experiment. Formulated a question, generated a hypothesis, planned a procedure. We are ready to start building! The CSU Volleyball team came and read with us! We loved every minute of it! We can't wait for them to come back next Friday! We reviewed for our Math test and showed all that we know about shapes and their attributes! happy Valentine's Day!We had a great time celebrating Valentine's Day! We had yummy treats and passed out our Valentines. Scientific inquiry with Marshmallow Shooters! At Monday Morning Meeting, a few of our students shared their "I have a dream..." pieces of writing. We had a guest author who came and read her book to all our girls at North. CSU Womens Basketball GameWe had such a FUN time at the game! Mea's mom (who is the coach) got us the BEST seats! The 100th Day of School!On Friday, we celebrated the 100th day of school! We had a pajama party with our favorite toy and had a s'mores treat at the end of the day! We have fun creating 100th day math word problems! Math We had a lot of fun learning how to measure the distance around an object and working together to do it! We measured the distance around our classroom rug. Where We Are In Place and Time We continued to share our projects about different cultures. Everyone did such a great job presenting! We are having so much fun writing fictional narrative stories! Our stories include some type of extreme weather event, so many were looking at books for reference and ideas. In Mandarin, the students learned a new song having to do with the Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the rooster! We love to do yoga as our brain breaks! We are now taking turns leading! We watched parts of Barack Obama's speech and discussed our thoughts, hopes, and dreams for our future. Obama said, change happens when “ordinary people get involved, get engaged, and come together to demand it.” We know we can make a difference, no matter how big or small the action is - or how big or small the person is:). We are more than halfway through our planner. We have been sharing our culture projects, as well as working on maps of our community. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Martin Luther King Jr. Happy birthday Adam! The Kindness Elves appeared in our room for the last 12 days! We had so much fun reading all the different versions of The Gingerbread Boy! We found found many comparisons and differences! We worked on map skills. We started with mapping out the classroom using this fun website! gingerbread housesWe made our own gingerbread ornaments to take home! At Monday Morning Meeting, the After School Program performed! Thy did a great job! S.O.L.E. How does land change? We worked together to research this question. After we collected information, we presented to the class! 5th graders from Ms. Hawley's class came and showed us how to Code! It was awesome! We had so much fun! They were great teachers! In Math, we were working on counting money. We started with pennies and dimes. Then, we added nickels. We learned how to have a writtien conversation while looking at pictures and making connections to our planner. How does the work people do connect to where they live? Monday Morning MeetingAt Monday Morning Meeting, Drink Local Drink Tap came to talk to us and show gratitude for our donations we made last year from our Holiday Shop earnings. We plan to donate proceeds to them this year too! Students got to share all the things they are thankful for! After reading Strega Nona's Harvest, we had our own harvest and made vegetable soup! We cut up all the veggies and waited all day as it cooked and smelled so good! We read this Science article about how people race pumpkin boats! We learned that pumpkins float... but we wanted to test it and prove it on our own, so we did! Our results were that everything floated, including a banana WITH its peel. The only thing that sank was a banana WITHOUT a peel! Hmm... that one made us think! We tested small pumpkins... but does a giant pumpkin really float? YES! Since we were exploring pumpkins, we had to make pumpkin pie! We couldn't believe that the mushy guts that are inside a pumpkin are the same thing that is inside the can! The whole first floor of the school smelled so good from these things! We read all about the Pilgrims and Indians. First we read an article from the Indians perspective, and then we read an article from the Pilgrims perspective. Our Harvest FeastIt was finally time to eat! Everyone was proud of their hard work and enjoyed the food we made! Monday Morning MeetingMany students shared poetry celebrating Veteran's Day. Their writing was great! Writing WorkshopIn Writing Workshop, we are working with our partners on an informational writing piece about an animal. We are researching what they look like, their habitat, prey, predators, etc. Reading WorkshopIn Reading Workshop, we were working on consonant blends. We looked and listened for them while we were reading. Working together on alphabetizing! We talked about and identified different kinds of animals, then wrote about which would make a great pet and which would make the silliest pet! (Many also learned what a yak is!) MusicWe always have a fun time with Mrs. Pohl in Music! MathIn Math, we are working on Addition Within 200: Place Value. We made connections between Base Ten Blocks and money! MandarinIn Mandarin, we are learning how to say different kinds of foods and also how to say which is our favorite! election Day!We talked a lot about Election Day and how our community votes at the polls. The students were bummed that they have to wait until they are 18 to vote, so they asked if we could vote in our classroom, so we did! Playhouse WorkshopPlayhouse came and did a follow-up workshop for Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. We were able to act out scenes from the play. It was a lot of fun! We read the Kapok Tree. The story is about rainforest conservation through the perspective of the animals. After reading, we talked about the causes of endangered/extinct animals and then got in groups and researched a particular animal. We presented our information in various forms (posters, skits, etc.) author's ChairThe students are able to read a piece of writing, a book, etc. to the class once a week. They love being the one on the red cube chair! Dancing ClassroomsThe 5th graders participate in Dancing Classrooms. They performed for us on Thursday. They did a great job. Many from our class said they can't wait to be a part of it. Veterans DayWe talked about Veterans Day and why we celebrate. the students were very interested in learning more about the Armed Forces. During Reading Workshop, they read more about it using certain websites. Book Character Day!We started our day by chopping up apples to make applesauce! Everyone's costumes were great! It was so fun to hear many share their postcard they made about their book character and how they took action! We paraded over to South and got treats from the Middle School students! When we got back, our applesauce was ready and we enjoyed it along with other treats that students brought in! After a fun start to the week, we got back to work! We love to work together during Reading Workshop! At Monday Morning Meeting, Aaron was celebrated for his upcoming birthday! We have been practicing mindfulness in our classroom. Mindfulness is paying attention here and now with kindness and curiosity. zoo field tripWe had so much fun at the zoo! We were able to make so many connections to our planner Sharing the Planet. Central Idea: Environments change over time. Living things interact in their habitat Fast and slow changes Human activity picture dayplayhouseWe got to see Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. It was one of our favorite plays ever! When a great African king desires a wife, only the most perfect maidens in the land are invited to meet him. Mufaro’s pride and joy, his two daughters of very different dispositions, travel through a mystical jungle and across a deep river to be presented to the king. Along the way, the two girls encounter a number of mysterious situations that unknowingly test their courage, kindness and strength of spirit. S.o.l.e.We love taking turns reading to the class. Griffin did a great job finishing up Marty McGuire for us! We started of the week learning more about condensation and evaporation. We did an experiment using a glass jar and hot water. We worked together to create posters about what we learned. We love working together! We did another experiment that represented a rain cloud! Clouds are formed when water vapor rises into the air. When the vapour hits cold air, it turns back into droplets of water. Those tiny drops of water floating in the air collect and “stick” together to form clouds. When clouds get so full of water that they can’t hold any more, the water falls back to the ground as rain. We put drops of food coloring on top of the shaving cream. The weight of the food coloring eventually falls through the shaving cream and it begins to rain! Our Worm Farm is doing well! We fed them and explored their new environment. It's Fall, so we want to observe how our tree has changed since summer. We talked about what looks different and how we think the weather affects the conditions of the tree. Ms. Hochman came in and did some really cool experiments with us! We talked about air mass and how clouds form! Fall FestivalFall Festival was so much fun! At Monday Morning Meeting, a few of our classmates talked about book characters that took action! They were helping to give ideas for Book Character Day. S.o.l.e. |
